Moving difficult-access homes: stairs, slopes and waterfronts

Much of Sydney's most sought-after housing is hard to reach with a truck: harbourside stairways, steep Northern Beaches driveways, Paddington terraces and Port Hacking waterfronts.

Narrow driveways and tight streets are part of most Sydney moves.

Common access situations

  • Steep or curved driveways where a large truck cannot safely enter
  • Long external stairways down to harbour or waterfront homes
  • Narrow terrace streets with no room to stop and tight internal staircases
  • Battle-axe blocks with a long shared driveway
  • Homes with no vehicle access at all from the street

How a good removalist plans for it

  • A site visit or video walk-through before quoting
  • A smaller truck, or a shuttle between a large truck and the house
  • An extra mover on long carries so the job keeps moving
  • Hoisting or rigging for items that cannot go up a staircase
  • Floor, step and banister protection planned in advance

How to describe access for an accurate quote

  1. Photograph the approach from the street to the front door.
  2. Count the steps and note any tight turns.
  3. Measure the driveway width and note how steep it is.
  4. Note where a truck could legally park and how far that is from the door.
