Packing for a move: what saves time and money

On an hourly move, how you pack decides how fast the crew can load. Small changes save real money.

Wrapped and strapped: how furniture should travel.

Packing rules that speed up the crew

  • Use uniform, sturdy boxes that stack; avoid bags and open crates.
  • Heavy items in small boxes, light items in large boxes.
  • Fill every box to the top so it does not crush when stacked.
  • Label the destination room and contents on two sides.
  • Stage packed boxes near the exit, not upstairs.

Things removalists usually will not carry

  • Flammables, gas bottles and paint thinners
  • Cash, jewellery and important documents (keep these with you)
  • Perishable food and pot plants for long trips

When a packing service pays for itself

Full or partial packing makes sense for kitchens, glassware, artwork and busy households. A trained packer is usually much faster than a family packing at night, and a packed house loads faster.
